DEADLINE: EJN Mediterranean Media Initiative Story Grants

Internews' Earth Journalism Network is offering grants to support the production of in-depth stories covering current and emerging marine issues in the Mediterranean, including governance problems exacerbating these crises.

The total population of the Mediterranean countries is around 529 million; by 2050, the region will be home to more than 650 million people. In recent decades, the once-abundant Mediterranean Sea has found itself at the center of an overfishing crisis: according to estimates from GFCM, despite some improvement, over 60% of assessed Mediterranean fish stocks are currently overfished.  

Despite the alarming biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation of the Med Sea, engaging and solutions-focused information on these unfolding crises is not easily accessible in surrounding countries.

To ensure the public is better informed about the scale of these challenges—and what must be done to curb them—EJN, through its Mediterranean Media Initiative (MMI), seeks to build the capacity of journalists interested in reporting more effectively on marine issues impacting their individual countries and the wider region.

With support from the Adessium Foundation, EJN is pleased to offer up to 10 story grants with a budget of up to 1,000 Euros each for this round of story grants to support reporting on illegal fishing and the biodiversity crisis in the Mediterranean region, as well as solutions to marine issues. In addition to funding, selected journalists will receive support from experienced mentors through the story production process.
