Environmental History Conference, Madison, Wisconsin

The American Society for Environmental History’s next annual conference will take place at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center, located at One John Nolen Drive, Madison. Hosted by the University of Wisconsin, the conference will include a plenary talk "Stop Saving the Planet, Already! – and Other Tips from Rachel Carson for 21st-Century Environmentalists," which is open to the public.

The talk will feature Jennifer Price, author of Flight Maps: Adventures With Nature In Modern America, followed by a panel discussion with Christof Mauch, Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society, Munich; Nancy Langston, University of Wisconsin-Madison; Lisa Sideris, Indiana University; and Lawrence Culver, University of Utah. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of Rachel Carson’s landmark book, Silent Spring, credited with launching a new era in environmentalism in the U.S. and around the world. Linking her life and work to the ASEH’s conference theme, “From the Local to the Global: Ethics, Environmentalism, and Environmental History in an Interdependent World,” the plenary will examine Carson and her historical significance, while also connecting her to contemporary environmental issues.

The conference will also include more than 100 sessions and ten field trips to the Leopold Shack, John Muir's boyhood home, Frank Lloyd Wright's Tailiesin, a walking tour Madison featuring labor history, and more.
