Dangerous Lead Levels Found in Nearly 2/3 of New Orleans Homes: Tulane

"A new study says nearly two-thirds of New Orleans homes and yards have “dangerous” levels of lead, according to federal standards, a finding the authors believe may be linked to the extensive renovation and demolition of homes after Hurricane Katrina."

DEADLINE: Scuba Diving Field Trip Offered by ORCA During the SEJ Conference in Miami. REGISTER BY OCTOBER 14th.

Join marine biologist Dr. Sarah Frias-Torres, Ocean Research & Conservation Association (ORCA) fellow, and invited speaker at the SEJ conference, as she dives to film and study the goliath groupers. This trip is organized by Dr. Frias-Torres and is independent from the SEJ conference and outside the official program. However, to facilitate logistics, the fieldtrip is planned for Thursday October 20, which coincides with the conference official day tours. REGISTER BY OCTOBER 14th.

"The effort to reduce the rising pollution levels in Silver Springs could become the model for improving the health of freshwater springs statewide. Recently, Marion County commissioners approved an agreement with state environmental regulators that permits the county to lead the process to determine the ceiling for contaminants at the fabled site."

EPA Finalizes 15 Additional Superfund Sites, Proposes 11 More

Sites in CA, GA, IL, IN, MS, NC, NJ, NM, NY, OR, SC, TN, and TX received a final designation of Superfund status, meaning they are among the most toxic in the country, due to contamination from industrial operations, mining, military activities, landfills, and other sources.
