"News Outlets Urge White House To Reverse Ban On Associated Press"

"Two letters this week expressed support for the AP in its quest to regain access to official events."

"Earlier this week dozens of news organizations signed two separate letters to the White House that urged the Trump administration to reverse a policy barring Associated Press journalists from official events.

Since Feb. 11, AP reporters have been prevented from attending official White House events — including Oval Office signings, presidential trips on Air Force One, and even an open press briefing last week with India’s prime minister — because of the wire service’s decision to continue using the name Gulf of Mexico, rather than Gulf of America, President Donald Trump’s preferred term, as codified in an executive order upon taking office. The news organization has remained in a standoff with the White House since then, with no signs of movement from the administration.

One letter, organized by the advocacy group Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, was sent to White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles on Monday and provided to The Washington Post on Thursday."

Jeremy Barr reports for the Washington Post February 20, 2025.
