REVISED FOIA BILL MAY BE SET FOR FAST TRACK

December 12, 2007

Senate sponsors of a bipartisan Senate bill to strengthen agency compliance with the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) have crafted a compromise version and reintroduced it in hopes of speeding Congressional action.

Sens. Patrick J. Leahy (D-VT) and John Cornyn (R-TX) introduced the bill as S 2427 on Dec. 4, 2007. Previous versions had been approved by the Senate (S 849), where Leahy chairs the Judiciary Committee, and the House (HR 1309).

The new compromise bill attempts to bridge remaining objections from the House Oversight Committee and speed final passage.
