Sam Schramski

As an environmental journalist with two decades of experience in news media and nearly as long in the environmental sciences, I am honored to be considered for a board position with the Society of Environmental Journalists. My vision for SEJ is to strengthen its role as a catalyst for impactful environmental reporting in an era of unprecedented global challenges.

Vision for SEJ

  1. Foster innovation in environmental storytelling: Encourage the integration of data journalism, multimedia storytelling, genAI and emerging technologies to create compelling narratives that resonate with modern audiences.
  2. Expand global collaboration: Strengthen international partnerships to facilitate cross-border investigations and knowledge sharing, recognizing that environmental issues transcend national boundaries.
  3. Promote diversity and inclusion: Actively work to amplify diverse voices in environmental journalism, ensuring that underrepresented communities and perspectives, particularly from the Global South, are integral to our coverage and membership.

Strengths and Experience

  • Investigative expertise: Led award-winning investigations into corporate environmental violations and policy failures, such as the "It's a Wash" special report for Earth Journalism Network.
  • Digital innovation: Developed online learning modules for journalists, covering topics from fisheries to climate change coverage to wildlife trafficking.
  • Mentorship and training: Developed and led workshops on environmental reporting, focusing on critical issues and innovative techniques.
  • Cross-sector collaboration: Established partnerships with scientific institutions to enhance the depth and accuracy of environmental reporting.
  • Academic background: Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Ecology and postdoctoral research on agroecology and climate change perceptions in the Brazilian Amazon.

Personal Commitment
As Special Projects Editor at the Earth Journalism Network and an independent journalist, I've honed skills in coordinating special reporting projects, developing online courses and supporting data journalism initiatives. My scientific background, combined with journalistic experience, allows me to often bridge the gap between research and public understanding.

Having worked in diverse environments, I've gained firsthand experience of global environmental challenges. This perspective will be invaluable in expanding SEJ's international reach and fostering cross-border collaborations.

My commitment to environmental journalism is demonstrated through work in the Global South. As a courtesy faculty member with the Tropical Conservation and Development Program at the University of Florida and a research associate at Indiana University's Center for Social-Ecological Landscapes, I engage with critical issues at the intersection of research and praxis.

If elected, I would leverage my experience in journalism, academia and nonprofit management to enhance SEJ's role in promoting rigorous, innovative environmental reporting. I'm passionate about integrating data journalism and multimedia storytelling, and developing resources for journalists worldwide.

In this era of complex environmental challenges, SEJ has a crucial role in elevating the quality and reach of environmental journalism. I'm committed to supporting our members, fostering innovation and ensuring that environmental journalism remains a powerful force for public awareness and policy change.
