Meet new SEJ board member Meg McGuire! In 2015, Meg created Delaware Currents — an online news magazine focused on the four-state Delaware River watershed and the 330-mile river — on her own! She was sweet-talked into this brave endeavor by journalism colleagues who were also in the Entrepreneurial Journalism course offered by the Graduate School of Journalism of the City University of New York. Most of the fellows involved had significant tech background or a partner who did. Not Meg. She's a writer, an editor and, in a pinch, a newsroom manager. She's spent the past nine and a half years figuring this stuff out. Meg is especially a fan of local reporting on big issues, to bring home to people how climate change affects us all and help us develop much-needed understanding of others who are likely dealing with even worse effects.
When asked if she recommends SEJ membership to her colleagues, Meg said, "There is a ton of support available right now via SEJ's website and the journalists who are members. Many freelancers find the support they need as they attend conferences (which are undeniably splendid) but don't know the riches they are missing the rest of the year. Explore sej.org."
